The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart invites all interested parties to its Science Colloqium.
Jesus Gomez-Zurita, Instituto Botánico de Barcelona, Spain
will hold the following talk:
Diversity and historical biogeography of the Eumolpinae leaf beetles in the South Pacific remnants of Zealandia
The Eumolpinae are a hyperdiverse mostly circumtropical group of leaf beetles that are particularly well represented in the otherwise disharmonious faunas of South Pacific islands. Eumolpinae radiated enormously in New Caledonia and they have been one of the main subjects of my research on biodiversity for the past 15 years. In this talk, I will introduce you to this group of beetles and their diversity and will place them in the broader phylogenetic and biogeographic context of the South Pacific archipelagoes, remnants of a now mostly submerged Gondwanan subcontinent known as Zealandia. The results of this work reveal some expected biogeographic patterns, but also others that we could not have anticipated, and hopefully will surprise you as well.
