Hans de Kroon: Creating perspectives for biodiversity in the European landscape
Hohenheim Ecology Colloquium

Abstract
One of the lessons learned from the dramatic insect decline in German protected areas is that proper management of nature reserves is insufficient for maintaining biodiversity. I present the history of this study and some more recent results. Creating perspectives for biodiversity requires changes in the agricultural landscape, including more suitable habitat, increased ecological connectivity and reduced pollution. Collaboration with farmers and governmental institutions is mandatory to make that change. I give a few examples of how new interdisciplinary research can assist in understanding enabling factors and bottlenecks. Such information is required before small-scale initiatives can be widely implemented. Working on new ecosystems under new conditions and in a transdisciplinary way also changes the science of ecology, in targets, analyses and dissemination.
Hans de Kroon is
… well known as the senior author of the ‘Krefeld study’ on insect decline (Hallmann et al. 2017 PLoS ONE), is a prominent researcher on the reconciliation of agriculture and biodiversity conservation, and is also well known for his work on plant ecology, plant roots and population modelling.
It is recommended to attend the seminar in person, but it is also possible to join via Zoom.
