Exchange, know-how and practical expertise with respect to species knowledge in nature conservation for PhD and Master students from three universities

On 17 June, two minibuses with biodiversity-enthusiastic young people started in direction to the research station at Federsee to intensively deal with species knowledge in a practical environment under expert guidance and with professional equipment during the Summer School "Research meets conservation practice".
Lake Federsee, located in the Upper Swabian district of Biberach, is the second largest lake in Baden-Württemberg and is also situated in the middle of the largest moorland area in south-west Germany. The complex of lake and moor, also known as "Federseebecken", is of particular ecological importance: the landscape is considered as model region for the restoration of an already largely destroyed natural landscape, including its botanical and zoological habitats. This makes it particularly interesting for taxonomic educational formats at the academic level.
This location offered the doctoral and Master's students from the Universities of Hohenheim and Tübingen as well as the PH Ludwigsburg sufficient breeding ground to develop already existing species knowledge in selected habitats, to network with like-minded people in a suitable atmosphere and to exchange ideas about where their further professional path might lead them.
The first KomBioTa Summer School included a full three-day program with crash courses for species groups, project work, identification and field mapping exercises up to legal framework conditions. In addition, there was time to visit the Federsee Museum or light trapping in the evening and enough possibilities for exchange and getting to know each other.
