NABU Ostfildern-Ruit has set up a new amphibian drift fence at the edge of the Häslachwald to protect migrating toads, frogs and newts during the spring breeding season. After monitoring the area and documenting numerous road deaths, the group successfully urged the relevant authorities in both Stuttgart and Ostfildern to coordinate action and install the fence along the boundary of their jurisdictions.

According to NABU Ostfildern-Ruit, the site can see exceptionally high migration activity on suitable nights in spring. On peak nights, volunteers have observed hundreds to thousands of amphibians on the move.

KomBioTa member Margaret Eppli has supported the onboarding of newly recruited volunteers who will help maintain the fence, with a particular focus on awareness of amphibian diseases and hygiene measures. With NABU’s permission, she will also offer a short-notice excursion during the migration period, giving interested participants the chance to witness the peak migration firsthand.

Because peak migration depends strongly on weather conditions—typically a mild, rainy night—it can usually only be anticipated about a day in advance. The excursion will therefore be announced at short notice once conditions are favorable. If you would like to take part, please email kombiota@uni-hohenheim.de so we can inform you of the date, time and meeting point.
