On October 17, the conference “Artenkenntnis im Fokus – Five Years of the Taxonomy Initiative Baden-Württemberg” took place – a milestone for everyone dedicated to the study and communication of biological diversity. Together with the Academy for Nature and Environmental Protection of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Economy Baden-Württemberg, the Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) at the University of Hohenheim, and numerous partner institutions from research, conservation, and environmental education, participants engaged in an in-depth discussion about the future of taxonomic knowledge.
KomBioTa was prominently represented by its board of directors – Lars Krogmann, Johannes Steidle, and Martin Hasselmann – each of whom gave talks on current developments and challenges in taxonomy. Many additional KomBioTa members also attended and contributed their expertise and experiences to the discussions.

The event highlighted the broad and committed efforts across Baden-Württemberg to strengthen taxonomic knowledge and biodiversity research at all levels – from scientific study to education and inspiring an appreciation for nature and species diversity throughout all stages of life.
Baden-Württemberg occupies a unique position nationwide: it is the only federal state in Germany that supports taxonomy to this extent, creating through the Taxonomy Initiative a strong network of research, teaching, and knowledge transfer that reaches far beyond state borders.
