The #DZG2024 attracted more than 230 national and international scientists to the Hohenheim campus.

From 9th to 13th of September 2024, Germany's most beautiful university campus was all about zoology. On behalf of the German Zoological Society (DZG), the Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) hosted the 116th Annual Meeting of the German Zoological Society (DZG2024). More than 230 national and international scientists took this opportunity to learn out about the newest research insights and to discuss current scientific issues with colleagues from other universities and sub-disciplines.

Werner Salzburger (University of Basel) - one of the Plenary Speakers - gave valuable insights into his research activities with fishes.

The program included five satellite symposia. Renowned researchers shared their experiences in six plenary talks. In addition, 80 presentations and around 55 posters provided information on the newest projects, insights and studies. The contributions, submitted by young researchers as well as experienced university lecturers, inspired intensive discussions about new research ideas and collaborations.

One highlight was a lecture on social immunity on Wednesday evening, to which the general public was invited to the Otto-Rettenmaier lecture hall at the University of Hohenheim. Amrei Bahr, co-founder of the eponymous social media campaign, spoke about the planned changes to the Part-Time Fixed-Term Employment Act and discussed the problem of fixed-term employment contracts in science together with scientists of the University of Hohenheim, the German Zoological Society and the audience.

KomBioTa would like to thank all speakers and participants for their attendance. A further thank goes to all employees and students who contributed to the realization of the conference.

The panel discussion #IchBinHanna, moderated by Peter Warth, provided information on the upcoming changes to the Part-Time Fixed-Term Employment Act and sparked a lively discussion on this controversial topic.
