Biodiversity talk for gardening, landscaping and sports field design professionals [16.02.23]
Prof. Dr. Johannes Steidle provides scientific facts on insect mortality in residential areas and discusses practical solutions with the more than 60 specialists
More than 60 representatives from the gardening, landscaping and sports ground construction sector came to the University of Hohenheim to learn about the current state of affairs in species loss as well as practicable measures to promote biodiversity.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, Prof. Johannes Steidle, KomBioTa board member and professor of chemical ecology at the University of Hohenheim, welcomed a group of more than 60 interested employees from the gardening, landscaping, and sports field construction sectors to the rooms of the biology building at the University of Hohenheim. The visit was initiated by Johannes Martin Jeutter in his function as regional chairman of the Stuttgart region in the professional association of landscape gardeners. He was joined by curious, experienced colleagues and the next generation of his profession. The exchange centered on the vision of planning, designing, and creating gardens in harmony with nature, thus contributing to greater biodiversity.
Following the lecture by Prof. Johannes Steidle, a lively exchange arose on questions of appropriate mowing, the selection of plants or the role of various insects within our ecosystems showed the need as well as the interest in the exchange of knowledge between theory and practice.
Events like these, where research and practice meet, not only demonstrate the interest in biodiversity development, but also the targeted search for actionable know-how that can be used in future planning and redesign processes that take biodiversity aspects into account. Prof. Steidle illustrated to the guests the connection between the design of settlement areas and the decline in insect diversity and showed practical measures to strengthen biodiversity, from the role of native plants and the importance of flower strips to optimized mowing regimes and the use of suitable mowing machines.
"Do the right thing!" was the motto Prof. Steidle gave his audience from an ecological perspective. In doing so, he emphasized the importance of landscaping as a solution to save the diversity of insects.
