Remembering Prof. Dr. Josef Settele
[16.10.26]
We were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Prof. Dr. Josef Settele. Through his research on the ecology and evolution of insects and the effects of land use on biodiversity, he made an outstanding contribution to our understanding and protection of biodiversity.

He established butterfly monitoring in Germany and played a major role in shaping the work of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). As an expert, adviser, lead author and chair of numerous committees, he worked tirelessly to protect biodiversity. Through his science communication, he also helped raise awareness of the biodiversity crisis. We were fortunate to witness his passion for these issues firsthand at the Taxonomy Congress in Stuttgart in October 2025. His passing is a profound loss for biodiversity research—which is more important than ever—and for science communication on this subject, and thus for everyone committed to protecting biological diversity. We have lost a dedicated and dependable ally.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his family and all those close to him. We wish them strength during this difficult time.
