Future young biologists expand their species knowledge [09.05.22]
Fully booked Boy's Day workshop in Hohenheim organized by KomBioTa
For Boys Day 2022, 17 boys interested in nature visited the campus of the University of Hohenheim with the aim of spending a day immersing themselves in the job description of a biologist. This event is organized each year across the country to give students in 5th grade and above the opportunity to learn about careers that are predominantly chosen by women.
Under the title "As a biologist on the trail of flying artists and crawlers", the Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) organized a workshop for the first time this year to show young researchers how biologists engage in nature conservation and biodiversity and what role a broad knowledge of flora and fauna plays in this.
Under the expert guidance of forest educator Claudia Preker and agricultural biologist David Becker, the students explored species extinction and human responsibility toward nature. During a visit to the Apicultural State Institute with biologist Doris De Craigher, the structure of a beehive and the numerous species of bees living in it could be experienced and even a drop or two of honey was tasted. After a subsequent field excursion, during which various insects and plants were identified, wild and honey bees were examined in detail under the microscope.
The feedback from the guests was consistently positive. In the final round, one of the participants said: "It was great that we were outside, could visit beehives and learn so much. The best part was that we could even touch drones.“
KomBioTa would like to thank all participants and is already looking forward to the next Boys' Day in 2023!
