University of Hohenheim ranks 6th in Biodiversity Challenge BioBlitz 2026  [02.07.26]

The University of Hohenheim participated in the Biodiversity Challenge at European Life Science Universities 2026, a Europe-wide BioBlitz competition organized via Observation.org.

As part of the Biodiversity Challenge at European Life Science Universities 2026 on Observation.org, numerous species observations were recorded across the campus. The BioBlitz walks were organized and led by KomBioTa. Students, staff, and visitors were invited to join the guided walks and document their observations using the ObsIdentify app.

Last year, the University of Hohenheim secured first place. While this year's result was "only" sixth place, the team views the outcome positively: the BioBlitz is clearly gaining popularity and attracting greater participation across many universities—a development that is warmly welcomed.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage friendly competition among European life science universities by recording as many animal and plant species as possible within a specified period.

The results once again highlight the strong commitment of the university community and the remarkable biodiversity of the campus. At the same time, the competition demonstrates that BioBlitz activities are reaching a wider audience and are becoming increasingly established as a citizen science initiative.

The BioBlitz format promotes collaboration and citizen science while showcasing the ecological value of university campuses as vibrant spaces for research, learning, and biodiversity.
