Fifth doctorate at the Center for Biodiversity and integrative Taxonomy  [17.12.24]

In September 2024, Maura Haas-Renninger successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Ecosystem services and insect decline: The role of parasitoid Hymenoptera” at the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart. She has now been awarded her doctorate by the University of Hohenheim.

Maura Haas-Renninger defended her doctoral thesis Ecosystem services and insect decline: The role of parasitoid Hymenoptera in front of her first supervisor Prof. Lars Krogmann (SMNS) and second supervisor Prof. Johannes Steidle (University of Hohenheim). In her studies, the young entomologist focused on the seasonal occurrence of parasitoid wasps within the ongoing LUBW insect monitoring project and the effects of different mowing techniques on the insect population. Maura Haas-Renninger succeeded in determining the frequency and diversity of parasitoid wasps at three different locations near Karlsruhe, developing suitable methods for faster processing of insect samples, describing important relationships between the insects and their habitat and formulating suitable protective measures for parasitoid wasps.

The doctoral thesis was made possible by a scholarship from the State Graduate Program of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg and by the project German Barcode of Life (GBOL III: Dark Taxa) funded by the Ministry of Education and Research.

The recently graduated biologist with a passion for insect biodiversity would like to further concentrate on science in future and will initially continue her research at the Stuttgart Natural History Museum.

Maura Haas-Renninger completed her doctorate as part of the graduate program “Biodiversity in Changing Times”. This program trains young researchers at the Center for Biodiversity and integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa). The completion of Maura Haas-Renninger's doctoral thesis marks the fifth successful doctorate for KomBioTa. We would like to congratulate the young scientist and wish her all the best for her personal and professional future!
