During a two-hour exchange on 18 January, members of the state government exchanged ideas with researchers from the University of Hohenheim in what will be Germany's largest high-tech research greenhouse. The Competence Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa), which was launched by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 2020, was able to present activities from its network.
KomBioTa board and management as well as researchers and students from the network presented current research projects dealing with issues around biodiversity and taxonomy. The focus was on the effects of innovative, insect-friendly mowing techniques, basic genetic research, innovative ideas for more sustainable forest management as well as a digital identification key for wild bees and a certification program for species knowledge offered since 2021.

During the tour, Winfried Kretschmann underlined the importance of the university's partnership with the State Natural History Museum in Stuttgart in the competence center in order to be able to show suitable ways for species conservation. The central mission is to impart knowledge and further develop tools for species identification. This involves combining classical species descriptions with modern methods of morphological research, molecular genetics and bioinformatics. The growing network engages in basic and applied research that seeks answers to current societal problems related to our ecosystems and agriculture.
