Prof. Dr. Hasselmann at the Science Pub  [30.01.26]

We are proud to share that KomBioTa board member Prof. Dr. Martin Hasselmann was recently a featured guest at the Science Pub Stuttgart at the Kulturkneipe Rosenau. The event drew a full house of lively, curious guests for an evening of science on stage.

With his engaging talk, "Halbe Kerle und tolle Weibchen – Wie Bienen ihr Geschlecht bestimmen und warum Vielfalt überlebenswichtig ist," Prof. Dr. Hasselmann captivated the audience with insights into the fascinating biology of sex determination in honey bees. He showed how, even as far back as Aristotle, the question of how male and female bees are produced in a colony intrigued scientists, and how today's research has uncovered the genetic signals and evolutionary significance behind it all.

Particularly compelling was his emphasis on the crucial role of genetic diversity, not only for honey bees but for all insects and ecosystems. As he shared during the event, “Here you can see how fundamental scientific knowledge has direct relevance for practical applications, conservation, and our future.”

He also highlighted the importance of science communication and appreciation for a committed audience: “Evenings like this remind me of the value of exchange between science and society.”
