On Saturday, June 25, a group of species knowledge experts gathered on the Hohenheim campus. Their goal was to successfully pass the BANU certification in field botany after individual preparation. To receive the certificates, the examinees must demonstrate solid knowledge of species. This is important in areas where nature and the environment are the subject of research, assessment, planning and protection.
For the bronze certificate, 200 species had to be known and 20 of them had to be identified on site. For the silver examination, 400 species were required, 32 of which were tested including their family membership. In addition, five species outside the 400 species list had to be identified by means of common identification literature.
Congratulations to all successful examinees!
In 2023, the BANU certification in bronze and silver will again be organized by KomBioTa in cooperation with Hohenheim Gardens and the Academy for Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection Baden-Württemberg. The upcoming dates can be found under Dates (in German).
The background to the BANU certificates is to establish uniform nationwide standards in knowledge transfer. The certificate provided by the Nationwide Working Group of State-Supported Environmental Education Centers (Arbeitskreis der staatlich getragenen Umweltbildungsstätten) (BANU) is awarded for numerous subject areas, such as grasses, birds, amphibians or reptiles throughout Germany. This is intended to ensure high-quality, broad-based environmental education in our society and to promote the associated ecological thinking as a prerequisite for successful economic action.
