Promoting young academics: KomBioTa welcomes five new scholarship holders [12.12.24]
State graduate funding enables new research projects on biodiversity and species knowledge
While the first scholarship holder within the Competence Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) started work in July, four more young researchers received financial support from the state graduate funding program in December 2024. Their interdisciplinary projects deal with current issues relating to biodiversity and suitable conservation measures to preserve healthy ecosystems. The work is jointly supervised by scientists from the Natural History Museum and the University of Hohenheim, thus strengthening the close cooperation in KomBioTa.
What are the causes of species decline in Baden-Württemberg? Why are invasive species such as the Spanish snail spreading so successfully in Europe and what can be done about it? How should an insect-friendly mowing technique be designed? What impact does biodiversity have on the resilience of meadows and how is this changing because of ongoing environmental changes? What significance does climate change have for various bird malaria pathogens? These are the questions that the scholarship holders in the “Biodiversity in the Changing Times” doctoral program at the Faculty of Natural Sciences will be addressing over the next three years.
The state graduate funding provides them with the financial framework for their own research in the form of a monthly stipend of €1,500, the opportunity to exchange ideas with other researchers and the use of the existing laboratories and collections at the University of Hohenheim and the Natural History Museum Stuttgart. With this funding, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts is supporting young scientists at KomBioTa.
Membership of KomBioTa enables exchange and networking with other scientists and research projects in the field of biodiversity research. Our events bring together specialists from different sub-disciplines, young and established researchers whose paths would otherwise rarely cross. Membership is open to all interested experts in the field of biodiversity research.
We wish the new scholarship holders every success with their research!
