A day full of discoveries: Young future biologists gain insights into biodiversity and species knowledge [04.05.23]
Fully booked workshop and positive feedback during Boys' Day 2023 in Hohenheim
Insect identification during the excursion in the park of Hohenheim.
At this year's Boys' Day 2023, the Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) again offered a workshop for the biologists of tomorrow. The focus was on current issues concerning our natural environment and the strengtheningof biodiversity.
And like last year, the course was fully booked again. Thirteen curious pupils of grade 7 and 8 from Stuttgart and surrounding had the chance to spend a morning on the campus of the University of Hohenheim. At 27 April, they came to learn about species knowledge and to understand its immense importance for the future of our ecosystems.

Together with Claudia Preker, David Becker, and Tina Barthelmes, they considered where we meet biodiversity in everyday life. They gained valuable insights into the world of honey bees from Lina Sprau and Manuel Treder at the State Institute of Apiculture, and identified insects and plants during an excursion in Hohenheim Park using a landing net, beaker and identification aid. Finally, they examined the details of insects under the stereomicroscope that cannot be seen with our eyes at the KomBioTa office.
In addition to this excursion into species knowledge, the boys received information about the natural science degree programmes at Hohenheim, the professional fields and perspectives of biologists, andthe challenges biologists are trying to meet in today's society.
The feedback that was given by our guests was consistently positive:
Important details can only become visible through microscopic examination.
"I signed up for Boys Day because the topic of biodiversity is very interesting. Especially I liked catching insects in the meadow and microscopy."
"Catching the insects, then looking at them and microscoping them, as well as tasting the honey, especially excited me."
KomBioTa would like to thank all participants and contributors for this wonderfull workshop.
