The state initiative “Integrative Taxonomy” was launched in response to both the global biodiversity crisis and the decline in species knowledge. The state of Baden-Württemberg has set itself the goal of preserving and promoting species knowledge. Two centers have been established for this purpose: The Competence Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa) has been founded as a joint venture between the University of Hohenheim and the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart for research and teaching, while the Academy for Nature and Environmental Protection has been commissioned and expanded as a training and continuing education center for biodiversity and taxonomy. In cooperation with numerous partners, a comprehensive and established program for the qualification and certification of species knowledge has now been developed. Educational programs have been developed and implemented at various levels of competence for a wide variety of species groups, from A for amphibians to Z for dipterans, including dormice, bats, vascular plants, grasshoppers, small mammals, ground beetles, dragonflies, mosses, reptiles, birds, wild bees, and many more. Together with the environmental academies of the other federal states, a three-level certification system for species knowledge was established in the nationwide working group of state-funded educational institutions for nature conservation and environmental protection (BANU), which quickly developed into a successful model. Since its introduction, around 2000 BANU certificates have been awarded at the bronze, silver, and gold levels.

The conference aims to highlight the social importance of species knowledge, present the opportunities available in the field of species knowledge and species awareness in Baden-Württemberg and beyond, and discuss prospects for teaching species knowledge in the future.
