Location: Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History (Löwentor) & Online Streaming

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart invites all interested parties to its Science Colloqium.

Ricardo Pereira, Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History, Junior research group leader "Population genetics and molecular biogeography" will hold the following talk:

How were species formed and how do they persist in a changing environment? Insights from non-model organisms

The intermediate stages of species formation observed across hybridizing taxa (populations, subspecies, or species) are well known to offer important clues on these questions. Yet, the lack of molecular tools and statistical methods have restricted research programs to model organisms that are not always ideal to understand general evolutionary questions. In my research, I use hybridizing taxa across the tree of life to offer insights on speciation and conservation genomics. In this talk, I will show how we use grasshopper taxa to understand how hybrid male sterility can evolve quickly during the Pleistocene glaciation, and how behavioral incompatibilities can allow speciation with gene flow. I will show how glacial cycles have resulted in similar patterns of cryptic divergence of octopus and sardines, which are heavily exploited by fisheries and deserve special conservation measures.

About the Speaker:
Ricardo Pereira has just started as a junior research group leader for "Population Biology and Molecular Phylogeography" at the Natural History Museum in Stuttgart. Previously, he conducted research on hybridization and speciation mechanisms of diverse vertebrates and invertebrates at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (LMU).
